Life of Thomas Reade [manuscript], 1692.

"Life of Thomas Reade, Rector of Moreton, in the County of Dorset, Written by his Own Hand and Designed to be Continued by Him, as Long as God Wills It." Reade gives a detailed account of his travels to Newfoundland, Cape Verde Islands, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Colony of Virginia. He mentions a storm in the English Channel that nearly destroyed the ship, social customs and fishing in Newfoundland, and the wine and women of Italy. He travelled to Virginia on a ship captained by Erastus Joy and stayed with Colonel Leroy Griffin. In discussing his stay he mentions the tobacco industry; flora; diseases, especially the effect of rattlesnake bite; the native Indians (whom he believes to be descendants of the lost ten tribes of Israel); Jamestown; and the poor treatment of white indentured servants. Reade also describes his life after his return to England, particularly his entry into holy orders and his marriage. Two genealogical tables of the Reade family ( one that mentions Sir Henry Unton) and a small sketch of the Reade coat of arms is at the end.
